Why Sean O’Pry remains an icon of the modeling world

In an industry obsessed with constant reinvention, the male supermodel has stayed true to his roots across decades. He speaks exclusively with Esquire Vietnam about his journey, personal style, and future plans of fatherhood.

American model Sean O’Pry has spent nearly two decades inside the machinery of global fashion. His name ranks among the most successful of his generation, fronting campaigns and walking runways for brands like Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Versace. Yet, despite all of that success, he still speaks with an air of small-town charm—something he owes to his upbringing in Kennesaw, Georgia.

“It was back when it still felt like a small town,” he explains. “The kind of place where everyone knew each other, and the sense of community really shaped you. We spent most of our time in team sports, so you learned early about accountability and showing up for people. The folks around me were grounded, kind, and dependable. There was no pretense, just good people doing their best. I hope those values rubbed off on me, and that they still show up in the man I’m becoming.”

Sometimes you don’t get a roadmap, you just get a door cracked open for a second, and you have to walk through it

That grounding matters when your life changes overnight, which is exactly what happened in 2006, when O’Pry was discovered on MySpace—an origin story that now feels almost mythological. “It was mid-November, and I happened to come across my now–manager Lana Winters’ laptop,” he recalls. “Everything just sort of lined up—timing, life circumstances, maybe even a bit of fate.” A week later, he was on a one-way flight to New York with $125 in his pocket. “Sometimes you don’t get a roadmap, you just get a door cracked open for a second, and you have to walk through it.”

That instinct of boldness has defined a career that reshaped modern menswear imagery. O’Pry emerged at a moment when fashion was shifting away from ultra-androgyny toward a more classical, athletic ideal. His face became synonymous with a new kind of American masculinity: clean but not sterile, confident without flash. Campaigns and runways followed in rapid succession, but he credits longevity less to genes or luck than to people.

“The consistent beat in my story has always been having a team and a family who pick me up when I fall,” he says. “They’ve always cared more about my growth as a human than as a fashion talent, and that’s made all the difference.”

Once we leave a set, reality sets in all over again. We get this rare ability to escape, to create, and for a moment, live in a kind of fantastical realm

That support system has helped him survive the emotional whiplash of a cutthroat industry. “When you’re booked, you don’t really get to have an off day,” he says. “But we’re blessed to be there—to show up, be present, give your best, and quiet the noise.” Working in fashion, for him, represents both escape and responsibility: “Once we leave a set, reality sets in all over again. We get this rare ability to escape, to create, and for a moment, live in a kind of fantastical realm.”

That sense of fantasy, he admits, has produced more stories than he’s willing to repeat on the record. “The ones that have really stayed with me, I’m not sure I should share in print,” he laughs. “But I’ll say this: some of the most brilliant and hilarious people you’ll ever meet are the ones behind the camera. If only you could be a fly on the wall on some of those sets—you’d see the chaos, the genius, and the laughter that somehow all add up to the final shot.”

There was, however, one incident he’s willing to cop to: “I accidentally set off a fire alarm in Berlin. They had to evacuate the entire hotel because I fell asleep in the shower—exhaustion and maybe a little Jägermeister. Who knows. What I do know is there was no fire, just steam. But I’ll leave that one for another day.”

Of course, there have also been moments when fantasy has collided with real life in ways he couldn’t control. His appearance opposite Taylor Swift in the Blank Space video introduced him to an audience far beyond fashion. The sudden new level of fame, O’Pry admits, disrupted a balance he’d grown comfortable with.

“It was definitely a great moment for my career,” he says. “She was kind, But I won’t lie—the exposure terrified me.” “Before that, I could work consistently but still move through life anonymously. After, I’d get people walking up, saying, ‘Hey, Blank Space!’—and then just walking away.”

Despite decades in front of the camera, O’Pry remains surprisingly low key. His most meaningful style artifact isn’t archival designerwear but a simple sun-faded baby-blue hat. “It was my grandfather’s,” he reveals. “He used to wear it when we’d go deep-sea fishing together. I carry it with me everywhere I go. It’s not much to look at, but it feels like home.”

The next step for me, if that’s what’s written in my stars, is family. I can’t wait to be a T-ball coach one day

When it comes to his personal style, he says he’s still ever-evolving. “Before, it was sweats. Sweats all day,” he admits. “But I’ve transitioned into a slightly baggier jean (think: the new Abercrombie fit) with oversized sweaters, or a simple T-shirt layered under a smart jacket and a clean white tennis shoe,” he says. “Super classic, but with a twist.”

He’s the first to acknowledge where some of that new refinement comes from: “The girl I’m dating has incredible pieces, and learning how she plays with proportions and vintage has been really eye-opening.”

For someone who helped define what might be considered the golden era of male modeling, O’Pry’s vision of his future is notably, and intentionally, unglamorous. “The next step for me, if that’s what’s written in my stars, is family,” he asserts. “I can’t wait to be a T-ball coach one day.”

It’s a fitting aspiration for a man whose greatest achievement may not be reinvention, but continuity. And indeed, it’s what makes him not just a model—but a role model too.

Lighting Round with Sean O’Pry:

Coffee or tea? And how early in the day do you need it to function?

I’m an iced-coffee-till-about-11-a.m kind of guy. After that, if the day’s running long and I need a little extra push, toss me a Red Bull and a Marlboro Red.

Sneakers, boots, or barefoot when nobody’s watching?

It really depends on the environment. Day to day, especially in the city or when I’m dressing things up a bit, I’m a sneaker guy. But being from the South, I’ve always had a love for a good boot, lace-up or a Chelsea. I usually drift toward a brown palette when it comes to boots. There’s just something timeless about them.

The one grooming product you’d take to a desert island?

Hmm, well, let’s think this through. I’m assuming I’m alone on this island and there’s no electricity, so hair products and shaving supplies are out. I’ve always kind of wanted to look like Tom Hanks in Cast Away anyway.

So then it becomes a health question more than aesthetics. That leaves dental and skin. In my version of this island there’s at least some tree cover, so I’ve got shade. Moisturizer or sunscreen would be great at first, but they’d eventually run out and I could probably figure out some kind of natural protection with water and clay if I found a fresh water source.

So I’m left with dental care. A toothbrush would be nice, but the bristles would wear down and eventually I’d just be holding a plastic stick. So I think I’d go with the biggest canister of floss I could find. You could use it, if you fashioned a hook, for fishing, for crafting and securing shelter and you’d still have great gum health.

Your all-time favorite scent? Clean laundry, fresh rain, or something more mysterious?

The Hôtel Costes in Paris — the scent there is intoxicating. The red velvet with the Parisian style amplifies the smell in the hotel. Notes of juniper, rosewood, musk, and amber. It’s warm, lived-in, and somehow still refined.

The Hotel Fasano in São Paulo — cedarwood, sandalwood, and Tuscan leather. It’s got this rich, grounded quality that just feels real and timeless. You walk in, and you feel home.

Every stylish man has a signature move — a way of tying a tie, a way of entering a room. What would you say is yours?

My signature move? Well, most people might not be a fan, but I love a tucked sweater or a layered button-down tucked into a pant, finished with a good belt. It’s a little old-school, but I’ve always liked the look of something pulled together, clean, and intentional.

If you could declare one golden rule of style for men everywhere — something simple, timeless, and true — what would it be?

Tailor your suits. Tailoring is everything. It’s the most important part of looking expensive…it’s not about the price tag, it’s about the fit.
